Has it really been eleven years since “Donnie Darko” was released? I still remember driving three hours to Chicago (from my then home in Michigan) on October 27th, 2001 to see it since it was only playing on 16 screens in the whole country because Newmarket Films didn’t know how to promote a film with a plane crash as a central part of the story, following September 11th. They just dumped it in limited release and let it practically go straight to video. Sure, it got another theatrical release in the form of a “director’s cut” in the fall of 2004, but that sort of fell on deaf ears. I suppose that’s why it’s still so popular on dvd and blu-ray. It’s one of the great cult classics of the new century. It also stands up as a great pre-Halloween watch. I might have to revisit it after all these years.
This is me thinking out loud.
